Porin as a Component of Yersinia Pseudotuberculosis Endotoxin
Lipopolysaccharide-protein complexes isolated from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria are known as endotoxins. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plays a critical role in the host response to a bacterial endotoxin. There is an experimental evidence for independent biological activity of the protein component of endotoxin itself. However, its contribution to the biological activity of endotoxin has not been sufficiently appreciated. The structure and properties of the endotoxin protein component have been poorly investigated. It may be partly explained by the complex composition of the protein moiety: it consists of a number of distinct proteins, which probably differ between individual endotoxin preparations. It was only recently shown, that the LPS-protein complex containing a single protein can be prepared (8). Owing to its simple protein composition, the endotoxin from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is suitable to investigate the protein component.
