Cloning and Expression of rfe Gene
Bacterial rfe gene is involved in the synthesis of enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) as well as some kind of endotoxins such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Escherichia coli 08, 09, Salmonella typhimurium, and other members of the family Enterobacteriaceae (1, 2, 3, 6). The gene rfe is located close to ilv genes at 84.5 min on the E. coli chromosomal map in the gene order ilv rfe rff uvrD metE (4). In the recent study, it was suggested that the products of the rfe gene(s) function mainly in supporting the coordinated elongation of the 09 mannan chain of E. coli (7). Moreover, Lew and coworkers showed that one of the enzymes coded for by the rfe gene cluster in group Cl salmonellae is dTDPglucose pyrophosphorylase, the function of which in group Cl is to produce a component of ECA.
