River systems

  • J. Ellis

Drainage systems for both urban and rural catchments often discharge into rivers or into lakes or reservoirs within river systems, and drainage in these catchments may be controlled by the conditions in the rivers; conversely, the rivers must themselves be designed and maintained to accept all the waters emptied into them both safely and economically. Thus, in drainage, river flows are important both directly and indirectly.
