Abstract
Interesting applications of Newton’s equations of motion occur when the motion of a particle in space is not free, but rather is constrained to lie on a given curve or surface. A typical example is the ball in the hoop (pendulum) in Example 5 from Chapter 1. A ball, subject only to gravity, rolls along inside a hollow tube bent into a circular shape of a hoop and the hoop is in a vertical plane. See Figure 10.1.
