The fundamental equations (5.2.6), (5.2.7), and (5.4.2) can be applied to a variety of experimental situations and in this chapter we will give some instructive examples of their utility. As the first example, we will show how information on the excitation process can be obtained from a determination of the Stokes parameters. In particular, we will consider the case of excitation of atoms by electron impact under the conditions described in Sections 3.5 and 4.6.
