Elements of analogue to digital and digital to analogue converters
Measurement is essentially a process of comparing one quantity (the measurand) with another (the standard) and expressing the result as a ratio. It follows that the accuracy of the measurement cannot be greater than the accuracy to which the standard is known. All A/D and D/A converters represent an analogue voltage as the product of a reference voltage and a pure number, and the number is expressed in a binary code. This chapter discusses voltage reference devices and the representation of a number in a binary code as a necessary precursor to the separate chapters on A/Ds and D/As which follow. Details of the theory of measurement were given in Chapter 2.
