Abstract

Sensors are the devices which generate the data for the system to acquire. There is an enormous variety on the market and it is very easy for a chapter on sensors to become a mere catalogue, and an incomplete one at that. The pages that follow explain the general principles and describe a few sensors as illustrations. Readers requiring more detail should refer to one of the many good books available which cover sensors in detail, such as Barney (1988); Doebelin (1990), Sydenham (1982, 1983), Sydenham et al. (1989), Bannister and Whitehead (1991) and Holman (1993).
