Abstract
Firearm assaults are an important source of injury among young people in the United States. In 1997, persons aged 13 to 19 comprised 9.75% of the population, but they accounted for 14% of the nation’s 10,369 firearm homicide victims (U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1997). National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) estimates for 1992–1993 show that those aged 15 to19 accounted for 22% of the 57,500 hospital emergency department visits for assaultive gunshot wounds, although they account for only 7.2% of the population (Zawitz, 1996).
