Like pioneers in other fields, contemporary jewelers have had to create not only the physical reality of their jewelry but often new ways to sell their work. Their work, viewed as alien by the retail jewelry shops that should have embraced it as something exciting and traffic-stopping, instead was shunned as different, difficult, “a problem.” In response, the jewelers turned to the phenomenon of the craft fairs and to the small number of craft galleries.
