The goldsmith’s ability to pattern and color jewelry takes many forms, limited only by the individual’s technical skills and originality. Given the quality of today’s goldsmiths, there seem to be no limits at all. Much of the work takes place at the bench, where the goldsmith hammers, heats, cuts, and pieces metals together. There is a quality of playfulness about this activity; one can see the child with scissors and paper, paint and paste. Goldsmiths often describe their way of working in joyful terms.
