Microbiological Life Support Systems: Photosynthesis Versus Chemosynthesis

Abstract

Biochemical processes involving photosynthesis or chemosynthesis are potential candidates for the development of long-term, regenerative life support systems. This report compares the gas exchange characteristics of the two systems with respect to reliability, balance, weight, volume, and power requirements. The data is compiled from research at LMSC on the photosynthetic alga, Chlorella, and the chemosynthetic bacterium, Hydrogenomonas, as well as from the scientific literature. A brief and tentative engineering evaluation, based on research to date, is presented.
