Acute Hypertension and Experimental Diabetes: Evaluation of their Effects on Blood-Ocular Barriers

Abstract

For the past several years we have been engaged in a series of studies on the effects of stress on the blood-ocular barriers. A variety of stresses have been studied — including osmotic shock,1 acute hypertension,2 drug reactivity,3 experimental diabetes,45 and carbon dioxide inhalation.6 For the measurement of barrier status, chief reliance has been placed on the localization of fluorescent dyes in freeze-dried tissue by darkfield microscopy. When appropriate, brains of the same animals have also been evaluated. In special instances, electron microscopy after the prior administration of horseradish peroxidase has been performed.
