The garden-variety mathematical calculations associated with mortgages, bonds, and stock options usually come under the heading of “mathematics of finance.” But there are also less commonplace techniques that use logic and mathematics to solve subtler problems that arise in economic and financial problems. Let’s start with a problem that arises in many different contexts, a problem with a surprising and elegant solution.
