Questions About the “Average” Value

One valuable feature of Statistics is that it demands of the user a precise statement of the aims of the investigation. Part of this statement relates to a clear expression of the quantity being studied. To a statistician, the word average has a clear and unambiguous meaning. Popular usage of the word is not so well defined, as the following example reveals.
