Donor Milk for Preterm and Sick Children
Human milk banking is common in many European countries. In Germany, a survey conducted in 2001 showed the high acceptance of donor milk among parents of patients in need of human milk. In addition, when a mother who delivers a preterm infant is able to provide a surplus of human milk beyond the needs of her own infant, this milk is preferred by NICU staff for early feedings of other preterm infants because of the special needs of premature infants.
