Metamorphism of Marls

Abstract

Marls constitute a group of sedimentary rocks with a very large range of composition. The clay constituents, predominantly dioctahedral micas (illite, phengite, muscovite), kaolinite, chlorite, and quartz, are mixed with calcite and/or dolomite in varying proportions. The chemical composition of such rocks can be expressed only by a very complex system: K2O-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeO-SiO2-CO2-H2O, and commonly Na2O. The approach to an understanding of such a complex system involves the study of simpler subsystems. The system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-CO2-H2O has been investigated in some detail.
