Pediatric Sedation for Nuclear Medicine Procedures

Abstract

The increasing demand for precise imaging using radionuclide techniques, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging has led to a large and increasing experience in pediatric sedation.2,3,5,6,8,9,11–14 Modern sedation techniques are safe and relatively simple to use. With this widespread use of sedation has come an increasing concern on the part of pediatricians and anesthesiologists regarding all aspects of this practice.1,4,7,10 Standards of care guidelines have been published by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs and are continuously being revised.1 This chapter outlines issues that must be addressed when establishing a sedation protocol and describes the techniques currently in use in the Department of Radiology at Children’s Hospital, Boston.
