Transmitters (I) --- Light Sources

In an optical communication system, what is transmitted in the system is light that in turn carries signals. Therefore, the light source is a key component for optical communication systems. In this chapter, we will introduce the principle of light emission. Because lasers generate better quality of light than conventional light sources, we will then introduce the principle of lasers. Semiconductor lasers are particularly useful in modern fiber optic communication systems because of their compact size and efficient power conversion. Therefore, the operating principles of semiconductor lasers are discussed, followed by an introduction to several types of semiconductor light sources that are commonly used in modern fiber optic communication systems.
