A Neural View of Computing for Nurses

For many years the health care community was introduced to the capabilities of computers by a comparison to fields of study relating to the health care profession. Basic computer hardware was compared to the human anatomy, and the software that was executed on the computer hardware was classified as the computer’s physiology (Ball and Hannah, 1984). This was a valid approach that explained many computer concepts, but computer science has evolved to such a point that such a simple comparison is no longer justified. Today we must relate to a far more complex system when attempting to explain the current implementation of computer applications in a health care environment. The human system that most closely parallels evolving health care networks is the nervous system.
