Abstract
Since the onset of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, we have noted an entirely new group of patients with swallowing difficulties. Dysphagia is noted frequently both as an early and a late complaint among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease. These patients are frequently infected with opportunistic organisms and/or have opportunistic tumors, any of which can involve the oral cavity/hypopharynx and/or esophagus. Because of the location, infection and early tumor in this area may cause symptomatology that would otherwise not be notable in more distal sites of the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, some AIDS-related infections and/or tumors of the gastrointestional tract may be treated, with subsequent palliation of the patient’s discomfort.
