Cio Stories, VII Children’s Hospital, Columbus: Realizing CPOE Through an Effective CIO-CMO Partnership
The current ongoing rollout of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) across the clinical areas of Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and the success achieved to date, would not have been possible without executive sponsorship by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and a close partnership between the CMO, the Chief Information Officer (CIO), and the entire Information Services (IS) Division. The components of this successful partnership are multifaceted and continue to evolve as the organization shifts to a more centric focus that recognizes information technology (IT) as a key enabler in improving clinical care. Even more important is the cultural transformation of the organization to one receptive to change as a result of new and evolving technologies. This chapter describes the approach and a framework that Children’s Hospital used to build an effective partnership with the physician constituents.
