Abstract

Brooklyn, New York’s Maimonides Medical Center is the third largest independent teaching hospital in the country and site of the nation’s first human heart transplant. Maimonides is also an institution with deep roots in the community, particularly the nearby Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park. Bound by tradition, the institution had resisted the transition to modern information systems that most U.S. hospitals had embraced for decades.
