The preceding chapters have conveyed a sense of the breadth, diversity, and varied clinical roles of family physicians entering the field today. As the classic generalist specialty involving primary care in its fullest dimensions for individuals and families over many years, the wide range of clinical practice has always been true. What is increasingly clear today is that the remarkable development of family medicine as a specialty, together with major changes in health care delivery, open up an even wider range of career alternatives and opportunities for family physicians than has ever been available. After some brief historical background, the purpose of this chapter is to portray and illustrate the breadth of career opportunities for family physicians and to suggest approaches whereby individual family physicians can consider career alternatives over time.
