Abstract
Family counseling in the area of separation and divorce is a necessary skill for the family physician of our time. Methods for dealing with family dynamics frequently are not attained through training and/or prior experience. The success of one’s intervention may consequently be unpredictable and depend on multiple factors. This chapter addresses this deficiency and aims to improve the reader’s understanding of and sensitivity to essential aspects of family dissolution. Some of the counseling skills necessary to improve the outcome of family adjustments are presented. It is hoped that the family physician will attain a greater degree of comfort and confidence in counseling through a better understanding of these techniques.
