Abstract
The family physician is a sports physician by virtue of his specialty. Everyday in his office he examines young people who wish to be certified as physically fit for team sports in their schools. Many of his young patients participate in informal or sometimes in highly structured sports outside of schools, from the corner lot to the local year-round ice-skating rink. Adults who run every morning, play tennis in the evening or softball on weekends, or who ski for two weeks each season are among his daily patient load. Everyday in his office patients bring to him the sprains and contusions, limps and effusions that are of consequence. He is a sports physician both before and after the fact.
