Abstract

Whether in local day school or in private boarding institution, the family physician has long been a chief source of school health care. The school physician’s role requires coordination of health care for the student, responsibility to the school administration, and communication with parents and the student’s own family physician. The individual accepting the role of school physician soon finds that the job calls for skills beyond those required for everyday office practice, and the school physician’s day may include teaching, counseling, preventive health care, direct treatment of illness, and rehabilitation following injury.
