Patient education is only one of a variety of activities which fall under the general rubric of health education. Health education to many implies giving information to the general population and particularly to certain target groups (smokers, obese, aged, handicapped, or public school children). Patient education applies to people involved as patients in the formal health care system and, as defined here, involves more than information giving. It emphasizes specific behaviors on the part of both patient and physician and assumes that the individual patient has the capability for responsible participation in, and decision making capacity for, his own health care.
