The Necessity of Freedom for the Free Flowering of Science

  • John C. Eccles
Part of the Heidelberg Science Library book series (HSL)

I have chosen this title because it is consonant with the magnificent citation for the Dunning Trust Lectures. I do not know of a better citation for any lectures. Let me quote : “To promote understanding and appreciation of the supreme importance of the dignity, freedom and responsibility of the individual person in human society.” I have really struggled with this lecture because I was inspired by these words, and that I think is the best tribute I can give to the words. Furthermore, it corresponds so well to my vision of what can be claimed to be the greatest spiritual adventure of our present civilization, an adventure that is subsumed in one word, Science. In Science the freedom and responsibility of the individual scientist are of supreme importance.
