Abstract

Karl Popper has quoted from Xenophanes two passages which reveal how closely this pre-Socratic philosopher had anticipated Popper’s views on the status of our attempts to understand nature— “a woven web of guesses.”

This chapter was originally written for a volume on the philosophy of Karl Popper, and was later withdrawn, another contribution being written in its place.
