Abstract
Even in the early days of ring theory, it was realized that semiprimary rings were worthwhile generalizations of artinian rings. In the 1950’s, with the advent of homological algebra, a number of papers were written about the homological properties of semiprimary rings. In his seminal 1960 paper, H. Bass studied the classes of perfect and semiperfect rings as homological generalizations of semiprimary rings, and obtained striking characterizations of these rings, both in homological and non-homological terms.
