Up until now we have viewed polynomials as functions of a real or complex variable x. This viewpoint is important for the fundamental theorem of algebra (Section 3.8), for example. Quite a different insight is obtained if, as in high-school algebra, we refrain from giving any interpretation to the letter x, and simply study the formal behavior of polynomials under +, − and ×.
