Part of the High-Pressure Shock Compression of Condensed Matter book series (SHOCKWAVE)

Abstract

The remarkable ability of solids to undergo a phase transition during shock compression, which was discovered in 1956 [4.1], has united shock wave physics with solid-state physics, and the prospect of a graphite-diamond transformation has given this field practical relevance.
