Mechanical Characteristics and Microstructural Changes of Solids Under Shock Compression

Abstract

The condensed substances recovered after explosion can be studied by conventional physicochemical methods or directly used in practice. The results of investigations and fields of application are conveniently considered in terms of the three-faceted nature of microstructural changes, viz., mechanical when grain size, surface, strength, and hardness of solids change, physical when the atomic structure changes and this brings about changes in body properties, and chemical when the composition changes and a new substance is produced with new characteristics at all the levels. As a rule, the depth to which the matter structure changes increases with increasing shock wave intensity. Therefore, we begin with the mechanical changes.
