Abstract

A suitable infrastructure for the delivery and consumption of multimedia assets has to be built and is becoming a contested issue. The role of the consumer changes to a more interactive one and requires standards fitting several components enabling interaction with content and the transfer of digital content. Due to the many metadata standards, one standard has to act as an umbrella over the others and provide encapsulation facilities. MPEG-21 aims at understanding how different components fit together in order to fit metadata standards seamlessly together. Therefore MPEG-21 seeks to create a complete structure for the management and usage of multimedia assets, including infrastructure support for commercial applications and rights management incorporated into the infrastructure.
