Abstract

Human hair is a complex tissue consisting of several morphological components (see Chapter 1), and each component consists of several different chemical species. It is an integrated system in terms of both its structure and its chemical and physical behavior wherein its components can act separately or as a unit. For example, the frictional behavior of hair is related primarily to the cuticle, but the softness of hair is determined by the cuticle, the cortex, and its intercellular components acting in concert. Although the tensile behavior of human hair is determined largely by the cortex, the physical integrity of the fiber to combing and grooming forces is determined by all three of these essential components—cuticle, cortex, and intercellular components—acting together.
