Abstract

Successful treatment of retinal detachment in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) by injection of silicone oil into the vitreous space to unfold and permanently reattach the detached retina was developed by P. Cibis. After Cibis’s death, E. Okun and J. Scott have continued and extended this surgical technique. It has been taken up again above all in Europe (Leaver and Grey, Haut, Zivojnovic) after vitrectomy in association with a temporary gas tamponade of the vitreous cavity had not provided the hoped-for positive long-term results in these unfavorable forms of retinal detachment. In the Department of Ophthalmology at the Cologne University Medical School, the silicone oil technique has been applied since 1979. Experience in operation of 300 cases will be reported below.
