Abstract

The goal of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) project is to improve the patient record by addressing the content, format, and potential uses of automated patient records. A project of this magnitude requires concordance of thought regarding the major subject of the study, the patient record. We believe a baseline set of definitions and principles would assist in focusing discussion and provide a clear understanding of the project limits.
