Abstract

In the future, nanotechnology will be used to build improved generations of assemblers (Drexler, 1986). The first generation of nanotechnology will likely be built with conventional chemical and molecular biological methods. In this chapter, we will examine solution-phase chemistry. It is the primary thesis of this book that solution-phase chemistry and protein engineering will bootstrap us into the first generation of nanotechnology. I will present the basics of solution-phase chemistry and molecular engineering from the perspective of a computer scientist or nonchemist technologist. Much of the field of organic chemistry will be abstracted and presented in a mathematical form for potential computer modeling. To enable the reader to pursue these issues further, the references have been chosen to provide pointers to more detailed sources.
