Platelet Monoamine Oxidase, Transcription Factor AP-2 and Personality — A Functional Triangle?

Abstract

Almost thirty years ago it was discovered that low activity of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO; E.C. 1.4.3.4) in blood platelets, which is to about 75% genetically regulated,1 is strongly linked to personality traits such as impulsiveness and sensation seeking.2; see 3 Mountaineers4 and pathological gamblers5 have lower activity of the enzyme than controls, an observation also made in type 2 alcoholics (males with a heavy genetic disposition) and individuals prone to commit violent crimes (see 3). It has also been shown that new-born babies with low platelet MAO are crying more and are more difficult to console than those with medium activity.6 Furthermore, platelet MAO activity in free-living monkeys has been shown to be linked to behaviour as well as to voluntary alcohol intake.7, 8
