Before the 1940s, medical research in the United States was supported primarily by private funding and by philanthropic foundations and endowments (Shyrock 1947). However, after the Hill-Burton Act of 1946, tens of millions of dollars went to hospital construction, opening the door for the introduction of new technologies into hospitals. After World War II, the early development of healthcare informatics was mainly supported by federal government grants and contracts.
