Abstract

The first and most important purpose of this chapter is to describe the extraordinary demographic shifts that occurred during the twentieth century and that will probably extend into the next. The lengthening of life-span and the increasing proportions of the elderly (65 years and older) in human populations have brought continuing changes, not only in our medical education, specialties, and health services but also in the economic and cultural structure of our society. Indeed, this book is written to respond to these changes and to address the specialized requirements for surgery of the elderly.
