In this chapter we present the principles underlying our approach to visual event detection. We compare how similar problems are approached in other areas of research and how they compare to the approaches taken in field of Computer Vision over the last 30 years. We present the Data Processing Theorem and illustrate its relevance to object recognition, visual event detection, and image and video understanding.
