Applied Bacterial Genetics
Bacterial genetics is undergoing an exciting time in its history. The new methodologies and concomitant understanding of molecular biology have given scientists new insights that are so far-reaching that it is impossible to estimate their ultimate impact. Bacterial genetics is becoming a tool for studying genetic systems other than those of bacteria and for developing processes applicable to specific industrial, ecological, pharmaceutical, or other problems (e.g., fermentation technologists and biochemists). This chapter presents some of the current trends in bacterial genetic research and some of their implications. Old and new technologies are included, for basic research in bacterial genetics does not cease but continues to reveal phenomena important to the understanding of life processes. The topics of this chapter should be viewed as summaries of subjects presently under investigation.
