Ultrasound is the most sensitive test available to detect thyroid nodules. It can recognize nodules that have been missed on physical examination, isotope scanning, computer tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). High-resolution, real-time ultrasound can readily identify nodules as small as 2–3 millimeters and accurately measure their dimensions and volume. In spite of its high sensitivity, its specificity in determining whether a nodule is cancer and needs surgery or is benign and does not need surgery is less accurate.
