Abstract

There is not yet a unified theory that explains the poor immunogenicity of most tumors for essentially two reasons: First, genetic instability of tumoral cells allows the emergence and selection of mutant cells that may evade immunity; second, there is a tremendous heterogeneity in the mechanisms responsible for immune system evasion by tumor cells, including tolerance of tumor antigens that may not be discriminated from self-antigens.
