Cellular Mechanisms Involved in the Immune Response Elicited by Genetic Immunization

The mechanisms of the induction of immune response by genetic immunization were a mystery during the five-year period when the major effort was focused to determine the immune response induced by plasmids containing genes coding for a variety of antigens. During the past two to three years, immunologists became interested in this area and achieved rapid progress with respect to characterization of cells involved in the immune response. A difficulty encountered in these studies was the utilization of various routes for administration of plasmids.
