Learning in the Plant: The Beginnings of Organizational Learning
In this chapter, we cover the application of learning curve theory to the firm as a whole. We call this type of learning Progress Functions to distinguish it from Individual Learning (see Chapter 1). Application areas differ considerably; some deal with ‘aggregate planning’; some with ‘capacity planning’ project scheduling, while others discuss the influence of quality (TQM), as well as JIT (Just-in-Time). The latter two items, especially, begin to encroach into ‘organizational learning’ and therefore will appear in the latter part of this chapter, since Chapter 9 deals with the learning organization.
