Abstract
Electric fields produce forces on electrical charges whether they are moving or sitting still. There is another quite different field that exerts forces on electric charges only if they are moving. Equally strange, the strength of the exerted force depends upon the direction of the charge’s motion. This peculiar behavior reveals the presence of a magnetic field.
