The Use of Coarse and Fine Peripheral Information During the Final Part of Fixations in Scene Perception

Abstract

A large body of evidence exists, showing that visual stimuli are simultaneously analyzed by a number of quasi-independent channels (Campbell and Robson, 1968; Blakemore and Campbell, 1969; Blakemore and Sutton, 1969), each sensitive to a limited range of spatial frequencies. These channels seem to differ with respect to temporal characteristics: Low spatial frequencies appear to be processed faster than high spatial frequencies (Breitmeyer, 1975).
