Brainstem Anatomy of Saccades and Ocular Following
It is convenient to divide eye movements into different types (saccades, vestibular ocular reflexes, optokinetic responses, smooth pursuit and vergence) and to consider the neuroanatomical circuits generating each type as relatively separate. Although it is clear that this is an oversimplification (Büttner and Büttner-Ennever, 1988; Büttner-Ennever and Horn 1997), individual cell groups with a function specific for one particular type of eye movement can be identified in experimental material. With the help of histochemical markers they can be identified in man too. In this report we describe the identification of two cell groups essential for the generation of saccadic eye movements in monkey, their location in man and their differential control from the superior colliculus.
